When You’re Dating Again, Don’t Rush Past the Friendship

When you’ve been with someone for years, dating can feel like entering a completely unfamiliar world. There may be expectations about romance, commitment and knowing exactly what you want from the beginning.

But you don't have to start there.

Sometimes, the healthiest way to begin getting to know someone is simply to become friends.

You don't need to decide what it is immediately

Meeting someone new doesn't have to come with the question, “Could this become a relationship?”

You can simply ask yourself whether you enjoy talking to them, whether you feel comfortable around them and whether you'd like to see them again.

Giving yourself permission to take away the pressure can make getting to know someone feel much more natural.

Friendship can reveal the things dating sometimes hides

Romantic chemistry can be exciting, but friendship gives you the opportunity to notice how someone treats you when there isn't a romantic expectation attached.

Do they listen? Do they remember the things you've told them? Can you disagree without it becoming an argument? Do you feel like you can be yourself?

These things can tell you a lot about whether someone is worth becoming closer to.

You can take your time

There is no deadline for deciding whether a friendship should become something more.

You might know quickly that you have romantic feelings. You might realise it gradually. Or you might decide that friendship is exactly what you want.

All three are perfectly valid.

If you've experienced loss, taking your time can also give you space to understand your own feelings rather than making decisions simply because you miss having someone beside you.

Let something new be different

A new person doesn't need to fit into the role your late partner once had.

They won't have the same personality, habits or history with you—and that's okay.

Instead of asking whether they can replace what you've lost, consider whether you enjoy the relationship you're creating with them now.

Your past relationship will always have its own place in your life. A new connection doesn't have to compete with it.

Sometimes love begins with something much simpler than romance: a conversation, a friendship, and two people who genuinely enjoy having each other in their lives.

There is nothing wrong with letting it begin there.

"You deserve to feel loved again."
