The Message I Almost Deleted

I nearly deleted the message without reading it. At the time, I had been a member of a dating site for several months. Friends had encouraged me to join, saying it might be good to meet people who understood what it meant to lose a partner. But if I’m honest, I wasn’t convinced.

I would log in occasionally, browse a few profiles, and then log back out again. I wasn’t actively looking for a relationship. I was simply trying to figure out whether there was still a place for me in a world that seemed to have moved on without me.

Then one evening, I noticed a new message. It wasn’t long. It wasn’t particularly clever. It simply said hello and commented on something I had written in my profile. For some reason, I almost ignored it.

Not because of the person who sent it, but because replying felt like opening a door I wasn’t sure I was ready to walk through. I stared at the screen for a few minutes before closing the app. The next day, curiosity got the better of me.

I opened the message again and replied with a short response. That was it. No expectations. No grand hopes. Just a conversation.

Over the next few weeks, we exchanged messages regularly. We talked about our families, our favourite places, and the strange experience of rebuilding life after loss. What stood out wasn't how much we had in common. It was how comfortable everything felt. There was no pressure to impress each other.

No awkward attempts to pretend we had all the answers. Just two people getting to know one another.

Eventually, we agreed to meet for lunch. I remember arriving early and wondering if I should leave before she got there. My nerves were all over the place. But then she walked in, smiled, and suddenly everything felt easier. We talked for hours.

Not because we were trying to make an impression, but because the conversation flowed naturally. When we finally said goodbye, I realised something surprising: I was looking forward to seeing her again. That feeling had been absent from my life for a very long time. Months turned into years. The friendship deepened. The connection grew. And eventually, so did the love.

Today, we often laugh about how close I came to deleting that first message. One small decision—taking a chance on a simple conversation—ended up changing both of our lives.

If you're hesitant about replying to a message, going on a date, or opening yourself up to the possibility of connection again, know that you're not alone. Many of us have stood exactly where you are. And while there's never any guarantee about where a conversation will lead, sometimes the opportunities that shape our future arrive in the most ordinary ways. Sometimes, all it takes is deciding not to hit delete.

"You deserve to feel loved again."
